Put the power of phytonutrients to work for you

What are phytonutrients?

The summer months equal more activity. From family gatherings, beach days, outdoor fun and more, the last thing we want is for our bodies to slow down. So what can we do to support our immune systems? Add more phytonutrients to our diet!

What are phytonutrients and why are they important?

Phytonutrients are naturally occurring compounds found in the plants we eat. They play many roles in plants, but in general they function as a defense mechanism to help plants survive and reproduce.

For humans, a diet rich in phytonutrients also have a number of defense and protective mechanisms – which helps make us more resilient to the kinds of stresses we encounter in day-to-day life.

“That’s why we think diets rich in plant foods provide people with a high degree of health throughout life,” said Dr. Keith Randolph, nutrition technology strategist at the Nutrilite Health Institute.

How can we make sure we get the phytonutrients we need?

We need to consume at least five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables per day to get the recommended intake of phytonutrients that the World Health Organization recommends – which can be a challenging thing to do.

Try adding peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms or onions to your eggs for a delicious omelet or grab an apple, peach, banana, or orange and enjoy it on your way to work. You might also consider stirring extra veggies into your soup, or choosing a day that is convenient to replace meat with all plant foods in your main meals.

What about supplements?

To fill nutrient gaps, choose a supplement product that includes a variety of plant concentrates or phytonutrients from organically grown plants.

“That’s how Nutrilite can help,” Randolph said. “Our products are not meant to replace healthy choices in the diet, they are meant to supplement those choices to help people achieve their health goals by increasing their body’s phytonutrient intake.”
